Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder that affects the digestive system and causes uncomfortable symptoms, including diarrhea, constipation, cramping, gas, nausea, and other changes in bowel movements. IBS is a chronic condition, which means it requires long-term management to alleviate the symptoms. At Equilibrium Health Coaching, board-certified family nurse practitioner Katherine Johnson can treat two types of IBS: irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D) and irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C). By taking a nutrition-based approach, she can help you gain control over IBS and lessen the discomfort from it. To learn more, contact her Frisco, TX practice today to schedule an appointment.
How is IBS Treated?
While there is no cure for IBS, it can be managed with diet modifications. Typically, eating 5 – 6 smaller meals throughout the day may help decrease IBS symptoms. Katherine Johnson provides functional nutrition consulting and will help you identify which foods may be triggering your symptoms so she can come up with a customized meal plan for you. You may be asked to keep a food journal so you can track how foods are affecting you. She may recommend you try a low FODMAP diet as studies suggest that it may be an effective treatment for IBS-C and IBS-D. FODMAP stands for fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols, which are short-chain carbohydrates, like fructose, lactose, and sorbitol, that can be hard to digest. She may also suggest you increase your intake of the following:
- Low-fat foods
- Probiotics
- Soluble fiber
- Water
